WOAH - what is that non-descript golf course picture above? Looks sick! Are we going on a trip/bachelor party/sales kick-off? I wish! No, my friends. Today we answer: what is a TPC (Tournament Players Club) golf course?

The PGA Tour heads to McKinney (Dallas), Texas this week. TPC Craig Ranch hosts the CJ Cup Byron Nelson Classic. Organized by the Salemanship Club of Dallas, the Byron Nelson originated in 1944 and is the Tour’s leading charity fundraiser ($145m since inception).

Why is it called TPC Craig Ranch and not just Craig Ranch? It’s part of a network of courses across the country that are owned, licensed and operated, or just licensed by the PGA. Similar to a team owning its stadium, the PGA developed a model in the 1980s to build courses to host events. A classic Make or Buy. How’d that go? Current PGA Tour stops played at TPCs: Waste Management, The Players, Valero Texas, Zurich, CJ Cup, RBC Canadian, Travelers, John Deere Classic, 3M, and FedEx St. Jude. That’s a healthy list! TPC courses are intended to support crowds, look good on TV, generate scoring, and support all the infrastructure a PGA event requires (TV trucks, cables, humans).

TPC Sawgrass was the first and best representative of the format. Famously, the PGA acquired the swampland for $1. Most TPC don’t pass the “should a golf course even be built here” test. They’re built for the skrilla. At non-TPC courses, the PGA often pays a fee to the host club and splits revenues (beer, t-shirts, ice cream). Architecture merits be damned, the PGA is plenty happy to keep the cash generated by events at these destinations.

KMARK, if I’m a member at a club, why wouldn’t I want the PGA to play there? Because you don’t get to play. Courses hosting Tour events can be closed for a month or two at a time. Particularly for weather constrained locales, giving up a month of play for the Tour is a compromise most clubs aren’t willing to make.

We’ve all read a Top 100 courses list and wondered why the PGA doesn’t just play at the top 30. That’s not the way the world works, Junior! At least for this week, expect man-made water features, wide fairways, and the winner to come in at -26. That said, next week, things get a little more interesting…..stay tuned!
