“You coach as long as you possibly can until you cannot do one more script, you can't walk out on the field for one more practice or do one more gameplan-that's when you know you should coach for two more years.” - Jim Harbaugh, Head Ball Coach of the 3-0 Chargers
🎙 Leading Off
Fall started Monday so I guess it’s a great time to start watching baseball. Oh, you’ve been following along all year? Good on you my brother. Now take it to the next level.
The MLB has a handful of radically compelling playoff chases. It’s been an amazing September if you aren’t a Met or Tigers fan. Detroit had the AL Central won. AJ Hinch and the Tigers went from the Darling of the League to clinging to a one game lead over Cleveland. As the Guardians have won 9 of the last 10, the Tigers have lost 9 of 10. In their last 18 games, Cleveland pitchers have surrendered only 28 runs! All this leads to a 3 game set starting Tuesday with both teams lining up their aces to get a crack at each other.
Speaking of three game sets, the Mariners completed a sweep of the Trashtros and have three game lead in the AL West. Cal Raleigh and Aaron Judge have the same odds to win the MVP, but Raleigh’s lead the surge in Seattle and should be adding a trophy when the year wraps up.
Should we talk about the Mets? The league’s second most expensive roster. Steve Cohen is known as one salty billionaire, and he’s watched the Mets go 25-34 since the All-Star Break. NY doesn’t own any tiebreakers over their NL rivals, so despite having the same record, Cincinnati currently owns the last wild card spot. Should we find joy in a couple generational September collapses? HELL YEAH. Baseball is a marathon and a September this rich is all we can hope for. Makes you feel something.

The Bills have won the AFC East. I know, I know. Week 3 just wrapped up. But, it’s true. I promise. Josh Allen is off to a historic start. His career arc gives me Peyton Manning. Mahomes is his Brady. He of the Super Bowl Rings. But Allen is proving once again to have more week to week talent than any other NFL signal caller. He’s marching to another MVP, and no defense has a solution for his arm or his legs. That said, you still gotta play the games. Here’s who they’re up against:
Jets, 0-3
I married into a Jets family and I distinctly remember the day they traded for Aaron Rodgers. I thought NY had a chance to turn it all around. My father-in-law’s response: doesn’t matter, it’s the Jets. Sure enough, Rodgers couldn’t escape NY with any more success than Zach Wilson. Fast forward to 2025, and the Jets are off to a classic 0-3 start with barely an offense.
Dolphins, 0-3
Mike McDaniel should be fired…checks watch…..right now! This marriage didn’t pan out and Tua Tagavailoa isn’t saving it. Miami poured money into their defensive line, but they provide no push. They shipped Jalen Ramsey out this summer and have no air cover. Tua’s here and staying here. The Dolphins would have to swallow $99m in dead cap money if he’s cut before 2026. JOB SECURITY. Can they recruit a worthy coach if that guy knows he’s stuck with Tagavailoa for at least a year?
Patriots, 1-2
Drake Maye and Mike Vrabel. That’s about it. How? Let’s look at New England’s 2022 draft. First round pick Cole Strange (guard?) was cut before the season. Second round pick Tyquan Thornton is turning into Pat Mahomes’ top target in KC. Everyone else? Some combination of cut or stuck on the practice squad. Years of hollow drafts have the Patriots staring at 6 wins in 2025. Vrabel will get every opportunity to turn this around, but it won’t be happening this season.
Bills, 3-0
After taking down the Ravens in week 1, Buffalo has a pretty easy schedule. One date with the Chiefs and a week 17 matchup with Philly that might not matter to either team. And honestly, after reading the above, it might be this easy every year for quite awhile. Kind of reminds what Tom Brady got to experience for a couple decades.
