“Arch is playing football at Texas next year.” - Cooper Manning, in a text to reporters, about his son returning to school, but hopefully because HE wants to, not just because his dad told him!

Let’s make Mike McDaniel the new Michigan Head Coach. I worked with this out with a local UM booster Friday. McDaniel is the current coach of the Miami Dolphins and I have zero information on whether he wants to move or if the Wolverines have any interest. I’m going rogue! Dolphins owner Stephen Ross is arguably the biggest Michigan donor. His name is on the business school. Nice move, buddy! Would he be willing to trade his pro team’s head coach to his alma mater? Can he convince the rest of the power players in Ann Arbor?
For McDaniel, trying to climb the mountain in the AFC East against Drake Maye and Josh Allen, but he’s stuck with Tua Tagovailoa. After a 1-6 start, Ross fired GM Chris Grier and McDaniel will have a new boss nest season. McDaniel has a strong enough relationship with Ross that he retained his job, and he’s got the Dolphins back to 6-7. That run of feistiness could be the momentum he needs to land a new long term gig. He’d bring an advanced pro-style run heavy offense to the Wolverines and a measure of swag they’re missing post-Harbaugh.
I wrote all this before McDaniel was drubbed by the Steelers on Monday Night. Sports World moves fast, but I still believe he deserves a shot to be the next Michigan Man.

The NBA’s third Emirates Cup wraps up Tuesday when the Spurs take on the Knicks from Las Vegas. You knew that. The players told you how much they CARED. You’re excited to watch them win an extra $500k. It all comes down to this baby! LIVE FROM VEGAS. I’m playin. I’m not here to judge the merits of this competition, because I think it’s a valuable idea. It needs time. It needs a few tweaks. And it needs to get rid of those ridiculous courts. As the NBA ponders moving the finals from Vegas, let’s also cook up some ideas of our own.
1. Get rid of Vegas.
Send the NBA to Seattle or Cameron Indoor or Rupp Arena. Anywhere but Vegas. Borrow from the MLB’s Field of Dreams model and showcase these games in Basketball Cathedrals or in cities dying to see pro ball. Why did the NBA honestly think they’d sell out a stadium in Vegas on a Tuesday night? No one’s there. Give it to the kids. Put it on a campus.
2. Get rid of Emirates.
Incredible airline. Worthless sponsor. Not worthless because I know they cut a mammoth check, but Emirates doesn’t have enough domestic touchpoints to promote the Cup on their own channels. WOAH. Marketing words. This tournament needs a Host. Borrow from the PGA model and designate a League Legend (or group) to promote the tournament and glad hand sponsors. Get someone to put their face on this. Not just a Turkish airline conglomerate.
3. Parade
Or some celebration. Ice cream party for the winning team’s fans. IDK. Give US something for winning. If you buy a ticket to a Cup game, and your team wins, the NBA needs to buy you a beer. Yes, the players are earning a bonus for securing the title, but fans are left with nothing. No parade. No banner. No civic pride. I need something. Don’t tell me to care. Make me feel like a winner.
Are we going to wake up in 20 years dying to get out of work to watch the Cup Final? Maybe. That’d be great. This corner of the sports calendar needs a little juice and the NBA took a worthy swing to make it happen. The scheduling is an impressive feat alone. We know the League will keep messing it around with it. Here’s to hoping this finds a way to Adam Silver.
