Hello darkness my old friend….turns into a Green Jacket, lifetime honorary membership at Augusta, and legend status for Rory McIlroy. Rory quiets the little voices. He’s a Masters Champion now. Only the sixth man to win the career Grand Slam. It’s reserved for the game’s inner circle. For as much as Phil pokes Rory, he’s on the outside looking in. And they have to eat dinner together every Master’s Tuesday for the rest of his life.

Heading into the Masters, Rory ranked 146th on Tour in average proximity to the hole for shots between 50-125 yards. Is this guy even good? He is, but dumping his third in the creek on 13 was inexcusable. Water wasn’t even in play. Whatever mean thoughts you had in your head, they were warranted. Imagine Rory’s brain!

Rory’s shotmaking was so elite today that he should vault to #1 in the world. Who shaped the ball the way Rory did today? Did anyone’s shot tracer look half as impressive as his? In a Battle of Beef, Rory bested Bryson with club head speed that could produce shapes Augusta’s pines couldn’t contain. Huge for Fit Golfers (would love to get there one day).

This was an incredible Masters. The weather was perfect (the breeze Friday made things interesting). The production was fantastic even if Nantz wasn’t Claritin Clear. Immelman has a very high floor and perhaps a limited ceiling. But he outperformed everyone on the broadcast. This year more than others, it became clear that this is Golf’s Super Bowl. It’s a Super Bowl you’d actually want to attend. The width between the Masters and the rest of the majors is growing.

Back to Rory. Major wins come in bunches (Brooks, young Rory, young Spieth, Tiger’s whole career). This newsletter isn’t in the business of prediction. But, Rory has a chance to open a second half of his career that vaults him up the all-time major winner list. He’s 35. If John Rahm is going to continue diddling in LIV and showing up rusty, then Rory has a window to scoop majors up.
